If the last time you dated was before smartphones, online dating can look like a foreign country. Plenty of people start again in their forties, fifties and beyond, after divorce, the end of a long relationship, or losing a partner. Many say it goes better the second time, because they know far more clearly what they want.

You have an advantage

Experience counts. You probably know how you like to spend your time, what you will not compromise on, and what made past relationships hard. People in their twenties spend years working that out. Use it.

Your profile

  • Use recent photos. It is tempting to pick ones from five years ago, but the first meeting will feel awkward if you look different.
  • Include at least one photo doing something you love, not just headshots.
  • Say plainly what you are looking for: companionship, a serious partner, marriage, or something slower.
  • Mention children if you have them, briefly. "Two teenagers who think I'm hilarious" is enough.
  • Leave your ex out of it entirely.

Talking about your past

You will be asked about previous relationships. A short, calm answer works best: "I was married for 15 years. We ended it kindly and I'm ready for what comes next." Save the full story for later, when you know each other. Long, painful details on a first date or in early messages tend to make people think you are not ready yet.

Children and family

If you have children, you do not need to introduce anyone to them for a long time. Many people wait until the relationship is clearly serious. Be honest early that your time is shared with them, though. The right person will see it as part of who you are, not an obstacle.

Be extra alert to scams

Romance scammers often target people over 40, especially those who are recently divorced or widowed, because they may have savings and be feeling lonely. The pattern is usually the same: fast affection, a reason they cannot meet or video call, then a sudden need for money. Our guide to romance scams explains the common stories.

Go at your own pace

There is no schedule. Some people date several people at once, some prefer one conversation at a time. Some want to meet quickly, others want weeks of messages first. All of that is fine. What matters is that you enjoy it, and that you stop when it stops feeling good.

Dating across borders later in life

Many people over 40 have more freedom to travel or work remotely than they did before, and are more open to a partner from another country. If you are, say so in your profile. It widens your options and often brings people with similar life experience and similar flexibility.
