You have talked for months, video called most days, and now one of you is booking a flight. The first visit is exciting and a little frightening. It is the moment you find out whether the connection you built through a screen holds up in the same room.

Who travels first

Often it comes down to practical things: who has an easier visa, cheaper flights, more holiday time, or fewer commitments at home. Some couples meet in a third city halfway between them, which makes the first visit feel like a trip you share rather than one person stepping into the other's life.

Where to stay

For a first visit, the safest and often most comfortable choice is for the traveller to book their own place, even if the other person offers to host. It gives you somewhere to rest, and a way out if things feel wrong. Pay for it yourself so you are not dependent on anyone.

How long to stay

A long weekend or four to five days is usually right for a first visit. Long enough to relax, short enough that it is easy to recover if the chemistry is not there. Two weeks together after only ever meeting on video can be a lot, for both of you.

Before you go

  • Check your passport, visa rules and travel insurance.
  • Make sure you can get from the airport to your accommodation on your own.
  • Keep enough money available to change your flight home if you need to.
  • Talk about expectations, including where you will sleep and how much time you will spend together.
  • Plan a few things to do, but leave plenty of free time.

The first hour

It is often awkward. You know each other well and not at all. Voices sound different in person, people are taller or shorter than expected, and you may both be tired from travel. That is normal. Get a coffee or a meal and let the first hour be slow. It usually passes faster than you fear.

What to do together

  • Visit the places they have told you about: their favourite café, their street, their view.
  • Do something ordinary together, like grocery shopping or cooking a meal.
  • Try one thing that is new for both of you.
  • Meet a friend of theirs, if it feels right, but do not fill every day with people.

Stay honest with yourself

Pay attention to how you feel, not just how you hoped to feel. If something seems off, you are allowed to leave early. If it goes well, enjoy it, and talk before you leave about when you will see each other next. Having the next visit planned makes the goodbye much easier.
